GTI Offers New Smells of
Clean & Fresh
“Memories that have a smell associated with them are very emotional and powerful memories that are stored in our brains,” Beidel told OBJ. “A fresh, clean scent will become associated with another time a person has been in a building, or even in their home, where there’s been a fresh, clean scent.”
Spurring simulation: How this tech-forward industry is breaking out of the military mold
Fragrances developed by GTI have been used in Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Minion Mayhem at Universal Studios Florida. The company created a banana scent that’s sprayed during a scene in Minion Mayhem, and it made a fishy smell for the Blast-Ended Skrewt — a scorpion-like creature that riders encounter at the beginning of the Hagrid coaster.
The tourism industry provides Global Technology Integrators with a steady stream of work to complement the company’s defense work, which President Tony Oxford said can fluctuate greatly depending on political factors.
From stinky to cookies: Orlando firm creates scents for virtual reality games, military training
In a tiny office in east Orange County, a company called Global Technology Integrators is creating thousands of smells meant to bring even more life to virtual reality.
And that means the hallway that leads to GTI’s office can smell like chocolate chip cookies — or something really, really foul. The company’s products are helping amusement parks, military trainers and others bring scents into VR, a technology that mostly has focused on sight and sound so far.
“It’s all part of that world that we can simulate to a user,’’ said CEO Tony Oxford, who started the business about three years ago. “Smell is the particular sense your mind hones in on before any other sense.”
Coronavirus fallout affects local tech firm supply chains
'For GTI, the virus outbreak comes at a bad time. The company is in the middle of developing a relationship with its Italian partners, Oxford said, and those efforts will be postponed until the outbreak subsides. The inability to build those in-person business relationship is especially tough for a small firm like GTI. Oxford said. "It's personal relationships. It's absolutely not brand relationships for most small companies."
